On May 23, 2017 Sgt. VanWagoner, the Detective Sergeant over the Millcreek Street Crimes Unit, performed a traffic stop in the Millcreek area after observing a traffic violation. Sgt. VanWagoner has many years of experience in working street level narcotics and during his interviews of the driver and passenger it was apparent suspicious and / or illegal activity was happening.
Sgt. VanWagoner observed a large plastic bag in the door of the driver side front seat. Sgt. VanWagoner gained verbal consent to search the vehicle to go along with plain view doctrine of seeing a large Ziploc baggie. The bag contained over 160 pills. 132 of those pills were identified as oxycodone. Post Miranda interviews concluded the driver and owner of the pills were being bought from a larger distributor for $18 to $19 a pill and then being sold for $25 a pill by the suspect.
The driver, who will remain nameless due to a current investigation, is currently being looked at as a major player in the distribution of pills along the Wasatch Front by the DEA. Larger distributors have been named by the suspect, with the help of the UPD Narcotics unit and the DEA, and are currently being investigated. The suspect interviewed by Sgt. VanWagoner indicated most of the people in his circle of distributors are of Middle-Eastern decent.
